If you've spent any time outfitting a truck for serious backcountry travel, you already know that what's in (and on) your bed matters just as much as what's under the hood. Storage that's actually usable, security that holds up when you're hours from the nearest town, and a setup tough enough to take the same abuse your truck does. That's a short list, but it's a hard one to fill.
RSI has been answering that call for years with the SmartCap EVO lineup: a stainless steel, five-piece modular system that became a go-to for overlanders and work truck owners alike. Now they've raised the bar again with the all-new SmartCap EDGE, and the upgrades are worth paying attention to.
A Quick Look at RSI SmartCap
RSI has been building truck canopies since the early 2000s, originally out of South Africa before expanding globally. The SmartCap’s design philosophy has always leaned toward function-first construction: automotive-grade stainless steel, modular assembly, and fitments engineered for specific truck models rather than generic one-size-fits-most solutions.
It caught on fast. Overlanders loved the SmartCap’s durability. Contractors appreciated the security. And anyone who’s ever tried to organize a truck bed realized just how much easier life gets when your cap actually works with you.
The RSI EDGE SmartCap is the next step in that evolution.
What’s New with the SmartCap EDGE?
As you can probably already deduce from the name, the defining feature of the new lineup is its edge-to-edge door design. On every previous SmartCap, you had a side panel with a door set into it. On the EDGE, the door is the side panel, running fully corner to corner for each truck model it's built to fit.
The result is a side opening that's up to 35% larger than leading fiberglass caps with side doors. If you've ever tried to wrestle gear from the back corner of a truck bed while leaning through a narrow opening, that extra room will mean something to you.
On larger platforms like the Ford Super Duty with an 8 ft. bed, the opening is genuinely massive, making loading and unloading feel less like a workout. Whether you’re reaching for a heavy recovery strap or sliding out a fridge/freezer, that massive opening makes access super easy.
And despite those bigger doors, RSI didn't sacrifice any strength. The EDGE keeps the same automotive-grade stainless steel construction from the EVO line, adding internal door reinforcements to handle the increased span. It's a bigger opening that's actually stronger than what came before it.
Increased Security
You get six locking points across the cap: dual locking latches on each side door, making forced entry difficult. If you're storing tools at a job site or leaving your overland kit at a trailhead overnight, you’d definitely appreciate this level of security which is hard to find on a traditional fiberglass topper.
Every Smartcap EDGE also ships standard with a third brake light and wiring harness, plus integrated roof rails rated for a 770 lb. static load (330 lb. dynamic). Whether you want to mount a rooftop tent, load bars, recovery gear, or a full roof rack, the structure can handle it.
Practical Upgrades
Redesigned Positive Pressure Venting
The EDGE introduces a completely new positive pressure vent design. It's lower profile than before, and the filter can be serviced from inside the cap without the need of tools. Another great thing is that the new design is car wash compatible, which sounds minor until you've owned a cap that wasn't.
If you don’t want the vent at all, you can pull it out entirely and replace it with a solid panel. It’s your call.
Vented Gullwing Doors
The EDGE Sport gets two-position vented gullwing doors as standard, meaning you can run MOLLE panels without blocking any glass, and still get airflow through the bed. If you travel with dogs or run the truck as a camper, that combination of ventilation and security has been surprisingly hard to come by until now.
Better yet, vented side doors are available as an add-on across all EDGE models. So if you want the solid-door security of the Defender or Commercial but still need airflow in the bed, the EDGE lineup finally makes that possible.
MOLLE Panels on All Models
In previous SmartCap designs, removable MOLLE panels were exclusive to the Adventure model. The EDGE changes that, offering MOLLE panels on the Defender, Commercial, and Sport as well. The interior roof also comes standard with MOLLE panels across all models, giving you overhead organization for frequently accessed gear, tools, or lighting setups.
Installation and Removal
The EDGE has a bolt-on design that clamps directly to the truck bed, which means no drilling required on the majority of popular platforms. The five-piece modular design also means you can handle installation yourself, and pull the cap in around 15 minutes when you need full bed access.
The Four EDGE Models
-
Sport: Clean lines, windows on all sides, vented Goldwing doors standard. Great daily driver option that doesn't sacrifice versatility.
-
Adventure (EVOa successor): Built for time on the trail. Solid side doors, MOLLE integration, and windows front and rear for visibility without compromising security.
-
Commercial (EVOc successor): Work-focused build with solid side doors and a gloss white finish. Designed to take the daily abuse of a job site without looking like it.
-
Defender (EVOd successor): No glass. All stainless. The most secure option in the lineup, now available in both matte black powder coat and a new gloss white finish.
New Trucks in the Lineup
RSI has significantly expanded which trucks the EDGE fits. The long-awaited Ford Super Duty 8 ft. bed is now supported, along with the Ford Maverick and Ford F-150, Nissan Frontier (both 5 ft. and 6 ft. beds), and the Rivian R1T. RAM 2500/3500 and Chevy/GMC 2500/3500 8 ft. beds are also on the list, alongside continued support for the F-150, Tacoma, Tundra, Gladiator, Silverado, Colorado, Sierra, Canyon, and more.
How EDGE Compares to the EVO Lineup
Both the EDGE and EVO share the same stainless steel construction and the same five-piece modular build. The EDGE is the upgrade, not a replacement in terms of philosophy, but it's a meaningful step forward in execution.

The EVO series, including the EVOc Commercial, EVOa Adventure, and EVOd Defender, remains a proven option for those who want the core SmartCap experience. But if you're buying new and want more access, more flexibility, and the latest features, the EDGE is the direction the lineup is heading.
A Growing Range of Accessories
The EDGE launches alongside an updated accessories lineup: new load bars, roof racks, full and half storage bins, and an all-new saddle bag that mounts underneath the full bin for extra gear organization. All of it integrates directly with the EDGE's built-in rail system.
The Bottom Line
The SmartCap EDGE doesn't reinvent what made the EVO series worth buying. It simply takes everything that worked and builds on it. You get bigger access, stronger doors, smarter venting, and a lot more flexibility in how you configure the cap to fit the way you actually use your truck. Whether you're running it on a commercial work rig or a weekend overlander, there's an EDGE model that fits the mission.
We’re excited to bring the full SmartCap EDGE lineup here at Rhino Adventure Gear. If you've got questions about fitment or want help figuring out which model makes sense for your build, reach out, we run this gear ourselves and we're happy to talk it through.
