What is a Skottle? Whose idea was it to BBQ on a disc?

Pronounced "skaw-til", the Skottle it is a South African outdoor cooking solution. Originally popularized in Africa, the large wok-like disc was traditionally used directly over a fire. Farmers in South Africa originally re-used old plow discs as an outdoor cooking surface that they could use while working in the fields. The Skottle caught on with the public in the 1940s and 50s and is now synonymous with grilling in South Africa. Anything that can be cooked in a pan, skillet or on a grill can be cooked in a Skottle. Bacon, eggs, sausage and hash browns are a great example for breakfast. Lunch or dinner can be as easy as stir fry veggies, steak, and chopped potatoes. There is no better way to cook sausage or any other meat for that matter. Nothing tastes better than a thick cheese quesadilla grilled on a Skottle. There really is very little you can’t cook on a Skottle!

Tembo Tusk Skottle Kit Features

The skottle grill is fabricated by Tembo Tusk in the USA and comes pre-seasoned so it can be used immediately. The easiest way to recondition the Skottle is with olive oil or any cooking oil and heat on a gas or charcoal barbecue to 450 degrees or until the oil on the metal stops smoking. Like a Dutch oven or cast iron pan, the more the Skottle is used the better the non-stick cooking surface becomes.

The Skottle is designed to use the included single burner stove. The stove simply hangs in the frame under the bottom of the Skottle pan. Typically, disposable 16oz gas bottle for fuel, but with a proper adapter, a larger propane bottle can be used if desired. The Kovea Scout Stove produces 10,000 BTUs of heat energy, which is more than adequate for cooking with the Skottle.

The carry bag holds and protects the Skottle pan, burner and up to four 16oz gas bottles. The telescoping, adjustable legs are removable and have a separate storage bag with a velcro closure. Fun fact: the carry bag is made of the same tough and easy to clean vinyl fabric that is used in bouncy houses.

Cleaning and Caring for your Skottle Kit

Simply boil water in the pan, scrape it with a spatula, and carefully pour off the water and scrapings. You can use rock salt and a paper towel to scrub any lingering food residue off the pan. Just like a high quality cast iron pan, it's best not to use dish soap and steel wool to scour the Skottle, since this can diminish the seasoning. If you're new to cooking on cast iron, here's more information on cleaning- it's really quite easy.
