We recently outfitted this 2017 Ram 2500 with a Rhino Rack roof rack system and paired it with a sleek, hard shell roof top tent from iKamper.
iKamper is the most innovative RTT we've seen hit the market. After extensive development and iterative design testing, iKamper shattered the record books for fundraising on Kickstarter and has found vocal support among both seasoned overland adventurers and the ever-growing glamping crowd. Between its hard outer shell, its cavernous inside space and its unique available accessories, there's no other RTT like it.
The Skycamp by iKamper is truly the best of both worlds. You get the incredibly fast set up and take down time of a hard shell RTT, while still getting the luxurious internal space of a larger bulkier soft shell RTT. Did we mention it's easy to set up?
The key innovative feature of this roof top tent is the size afforded by the ultra-high-strength aluminum honeycomb folding platform. This enables a king size bed to fit inside the hard fiberglass shell. With the Skycamp by iKamper, you no longer have to decide whether or not to sacrifice sleeping area to enjoy the benefits of a hard shell RTT. The Skycamp can comfortably sleep 4 people (2 adults & 2 kids) AND has the added insulation and aerodynamic benefits of a hard shell roof top tent. The best of both worlds.
iKamper Roof Top Tent Installation Tips
Installation Tip #1: Invest in a Quality Roof Rack System
It all starts with a solid foundation. For most vehicles on the market, the factory OEM roof rack system just isn't going to cut it. With the Skycamp hard shell roof top tent clocking in at 156 - 161 lbs, you need a roof rack that is rated to support at least 165 lbs when driving. You can check the dynamic load capacity of factory racks with your vehicle's manufacturer. As an authorized dealer for Rhino Rack, we can also outfit most any vehicle with a proper set of crossbars or roof rack system to ensure a safe and correct fit for your new roof top tent. Give us a ring, or shoot us an email - we're more than happy to help.
Installation Tip #2: Use a Hoist Lift or a few tall friends to get the iKamper onto your Roof Rack
Especially with taller vehicles, it can be cumbersome to lift a bulky 160 lb object overhead without injuring yourself, your vehicle, or your shiny new tent. We suggest rounding up a few tall friends to help. Don't try this alone.
Alternatively, you can have us professionally install your tent. Our showroom has a drive-in installation bay that is equipped with a hoist lift system.
We drive in, park and lower the tent onto your rack system! If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area or feel like a road trip from California or beyond, we encourage you to call and schedule an appointment to come visit our Showroom. We'd love to get you outfitted with your dream setup and hear about your adventures!
